Flying can be a tough experience for many. Some travelers take steps to make sure they are comfy before heading out on their journey. But not everyone thinks about this.
This woman understood what she needed while traveling and did just that. However, others had a different view…
A woman found herself in an awkward situation both literally and figuratively. She was caught between putting her own comfort first or following social norms. She had to decide; should she be kind or defend her personal space?
She was flying across the country to celebrate Christmas with her family. Knowing how important comfort is when flying, she always books an extra seat due to her size, paying more for it so she could relax.
Everything went well during check-in, and security and boarding were smooth too. It was only when she settled into her seat that things took a turn for the worse. A woman with an 18-month-old child sat next to her and noticed there was one empty seat nearby; she quickly asked if the woman could squeeze into one seat so that her toddler could use the other one. But since the original passenger had paid for both seats, she said no.
The scene started attracting attention, prompting a flight attendant to come over and see what was happening. After hearing about it from the seated lady, the attendant asked if there was any way for her to make room for the child but got politely turned down again as she’d paid fully for both seats.
Fortunately, the flight attendant understood and told the mother that she’d need to hold her child in her lap like most parents do at that age! Throughout their trip though, this mother made sure to give dirty looks & throw passive-aggressive comments at our main character.
Later on, this woman wondered if maybe she’d been unfair in this situation & should have given up some of her space after all? So she turned to Reddit asking folks whether she’d done something wrong.
One user who happened also being a mom shared: “I’ve taken long flights holding my baby & shorter ones with my toddler who didn’t want me holding him! Was it hard? Yes! But it’s my issue alone; as long as he’s under 24 months & I don’t have pay extra I’ll hold him.”
Another commenter added: “She’s wrong not buying a spot for him expecting someone else would give up theirs they paid full price for! She probably thought there’d be spare seats so didn’t want pay.”
“I’d even think about filing a complaint against airline staff supporting another passenger bothering you,” another upset Redditor wrote.
Another frustrated user mentioned: “You should always try your best being healthy but being overweight isn’t bad character or moral failing! We all face challenges in life; you shouldn’t feel ashamed of your body even if you’re not hitting goals right now! If mom wanted extra room then buy another ticket—she’s not entitled!”
While some might understand where this mother is coming from wanting comfort too—if it mattered enough then surely getting an extra seat would’ve been priority!
