Tom Selleck is a well-known name. The 78-year-old actor has been in the entertainment industry for many years, and even with some recent health issues, he doesn’t seem to be planning on stopping anytime soon. Recently, he’s been part of the popular show Blue Bloods.
Selleck’s look has become his signature style, and we’ve all gotten used to it. However, fans are surprised about one thing that’s changed: His famous mustache.
Growing up, Tom Selleck wasn’t sure if acting was for him. He was born on January 29, 1945 in Detroit but moved to California as a child and grew up in the San Fernando Valley.
Tom Selleck – early life
Selleck wanted to go to the University of Southern California (USC), but his family couldn’t pay for it.
He graduated from Grant High School in 1962 and then went to Los Angeles Valley College while living at home with his parents to save money.
In those early days, it looked like Tom would pursue sports instead of acting. He was a promising basketball player who dreamed of going pro. So you can imagine how thrilled he was when he got a basketball scholarship at USC.
“I never did school plays; I had no interest,” Tom told AARP back in 2015.
Eventually, Selleck realized that basketball might not be his future after all. He took on side jobs to help cover tuition costs and started appearing in TV commercials as well as on The Dating Game.
Soon after that, he got an opportunity with 20th Century Fox’s talent program where he began honing his craft but left for six months due to active duty service.
When he returned from service, Selleck found himself dropped from the program. But instead of giving up hope, he believed strongly that he’d succeed as an actor.
In the early ’70s, Tom landed smaller roles across various TV shows before hitting his mid-30s when he starred in six pilots without much luck until then.
Tom Selleck in ‘Magnum P.I.’
According to Tom himself many thought success came overnight when he got cast as Thomas Magnum on Magnum P.I.
But really? It had taken him years of hard work!
“The best thing that happened was I didn’t get a real job until I turned 35,” said Selleck.
“When I hit 25 I looked older than my age but sounded younger.”
Magnum P.I. became incredibly popular! The crime drama ran from 1980 until ’88 making Tom an instant star! He received five Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor before finally winning one in ’84! Without this show? Who knows if he’d still be acting today?
Through Magnum, P.I., Selleck achieved cult status; since then he’s enjoyed great success including films like Three Men and a Baby and In & Out. Plus new fans discovered him playing Richard Burke—Monica Geller’s older boyfriend—in Season Two of Friends.
In 2010? He took on Frank Reagan’s role within drama series Blue Bloods which opened fresh doors for him! This show has now run over thirteen seasons!
“I never imagined being lucky enough doing something so long-lasting,” said Selleck.
Tom Selleck says his back is “messed up”
“I starred alongside number one movie Three Men And A Baby while wanting family time too.”
The number of series reaching such episode counts like Blue Bloods is very rare indeed—a true testament showing everyone involved works hard together!
Actors often have stunt doubles because stunts can be risky business—but some prefer doing their own stunts regardless!
Sellecks done most stunts himself over time yet admits it’s taken its toll physically saying:
“My back’s kind messed up.”
“Doing stunts means taking risks plus sitting around afterward too—so you might do action scenes followed by waiting around without personal trainers reminding you about stretching or warming-up.”
“And there’s definitely consequences,” added Sellick “I see this among peers talking sometimes—it shows through all those past experiences.”
Interestingly enough? Although not fond gym workouts—he stays fit working at their ranch located Ventura County!
“I own sixty-three acres where I handle plenty grunt work myself clearing brush planting trees—we’ve planted nearly thousand trees!”
Tom Selleck – iconic mustache
Outside regular work interests include horses plus writing aspirations too!

“It captures what life looks like being actor—you finish projects only find yourself unemployed again—it should bring laughs since humor helps sustain long careers!”
Since becoming famous via Magnum P.I., people associate him closely with mustaches which made him worry about career impact feeling stuck forever having them attached:
“After filming ended—I thought ‘Oh no!’ Mustache questions will follow me always!”
“Most times hired they’d say keep mustache unless needed shaved off—I’m ready working without it!”
Meanwhile jokingly mentioned landing role Blue Bloods could’ve happened due facial hair:
“Well meant job offer there!” stated Sellick “Director suggested maybe try playing character clean-shaven—I replied ‘Sure born this way!’”
