New reports indicate that Liam Payne jumped from his third-floor balcony on purpose, but he wasn’t trying to hurt himself. He was actually trying to get away from the hotel room where staff had “forced” him to stay.
Recent news states that Liam Payne, who was 31 when he passed away on October 16, had a past of using hotel balconies as escape routes.
TMZ mentions that Payne “disliked” being locked in rooms, which was something he faced during his time with One Direction.
In September, just a month before his tragic fall, his bodyguard worried the singer was on a “drug binge” and kept him confined in a Florida rental house.
That night, Payne used the balcony as an escape path and safely climbed down using a garden hose.
When he fell to his death from the third-floor balcony of his hotel in Argentina, it seems he hoped for another safe landing.
Taken back to his room
TMZ reports that witness accounts, video footage, a 911 call and police documents all support this idea.
The outlet got video from the lobby of Casa Sur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires recorded shortly before the singer’s sad passing.
The footage shows Payne standing up and then acting “strangely” in the main area of the hotel while resisting staff members who were trying to take him back to his room.
Three people are seen carrying Payne back just minutes before he died.
Handled firmly by these men, the “What Makes you Beautiful” singer is shown as being “splayed out” and clearly aware of what’s happening while holding up his head.
Balcony as an escape
After they lifted him off the ground, they took him towards his hotel door where again he struggled against going inside.
“The hotel used a master key to unlock it,” according to police records obtained by TMZ. They also removed a mirror outside so it wouldn’t get damaged.”
It’s thought that Payne told workers he’d use the balcony if forced into staying inside; this message reached frantic staff who called 911 for help.
The transcript shared by Reuters supports this: “We need someone urgently because I’m not sure if this guest’s life is at risk. He is in a room with access to a balcony… we’re worried about what might happen.”
Left alone locked inside moments later; it appears he followed through with what he’d said about escaping via the balcony.
Escape bags
When found on ground below; there was bag around shoulder which TMZ says “wasn’t there when carried out from lobby.”
A black New York Yankees cap was also discovered nearby—another item not worn earlier—indicating he may have put it on while still inside.
Police records show that instead of planning for such high drop; Liam aimed for jumping down one floor making fall shorter than expected. This theory is backed by brown leather bag found two days later below by another worker at same hotel.
This bag “not attached” contained pills along with whiskey bottle plus note saying “for Liam.”
“Likely dropped bag down first before attempting jump,” writes TMZ
While coroner suggests unconsciousness may have occurred during fall; it’s clear Liam prepared those getaway bags beforehand.
