A simple word puzzle that tricks more people than you’d think

Word games, puzzles, and optical illusions are all fun. But sometimes the simplest puzzles are the trickiest. Today, we’ve got a word challenge that looks easy… However, it’s designed to make you think twice.

Below, you’ll see eight words. Your task? Find the four that belong together. Sounds simple, right? Here’s the twist: the other four are close enough to trick you, so your first instinct might be wrong.

Still, there are two sets of four, and depending on your way of thinking, you’ll get one set of four before the other.

Your words are:

  • Apple
  • Pear
  • Grape
  • Tomato
  • Peach
  • carrot
  • potato
  • broccoli

Take a moment. Don’t rush. Which four stand out as a clear group?

Hint: Sometimes what seems “obvious” isn’t always correct. Think carefully about categories and connections.

Once you’ve made your choice, share your answer in the comments — and don’t peek at anyone else’s too soon!

These little challenges are more than fun — they’re also great exercise for your brain. They sharpen your thinking, improve your pattern recognition, and give you a little confidence boost when you solve them.

Word puzzle

So… can you spot the group of four that truly fits together?

The one group of four is:
apple – pear – peach – grape: all are fruits

The other “tricky” group is:
carrot · tomato · potato · broccoli: all are vegetables

It might not be that easy for everyone, perhaps for two main reasons. A tomato is technically a fruit, which might be the reason many are tempted not to put it in the group of vegetables.

At the same time, everything is edible, so it’s quite natural that the brain hesitates.

We hope this small word game puzzle was fun and also somewhat of a training exercise in disguise. These exercises sharpen focus, problem-solving, and pattern recognition, and they don’t take much time.

So, did you get it right? Share your result in the comments and see how your friends did!
