His absence stands out because just last year Trump made headlines by attending the Super Bowl, becoming the first sitting U.S. president to do so. He watched the matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans, though reports noted he did not stay for the entire event.
The reason Trump gave
Trump addressed this year’s absence ahead of the game in an interview with the New York Post. His explanation was straightforward: distance.
“It’s just too far away,” he said, adding that he would consider going “if it was a little bit shorter.”
A trip from Washington, D.C. to California typically takes five to six hours by air, making it a significant time commitment even for a president accustomed to frequent travel.
Another possible factor
Beyond travel time, some observers believe there may be more behind the decision. Trump has openly criticized parts of this year’s Super Bowl entertainment lineup.
He voiced disapproval of performers such as Green Day and Bad Bunny, both of whom were scheduled for major musical roles surrounding the game.
Trump reportedly said of the choices:
“I’m anti-them. I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred.”
Bad Bunny, one of the world’s biggest Latin music stars, has previously made public comments about social and political issues, and his performances often carry cultural significance for his fans.
