Expert Says Suspect in Nancy Guthrie Case May Have Made a Key Mistake

The search for missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie has entered a critical phase as investigators analyze newly recovered surveillance footage and follow up on potential leads.

Recent developments include the temporary detention and release of one individual for questioning, as well as the release of home security images that investigators hope will generate new tips from the public.

Now, a former FBI official says the person seen near Guthrie’s home may have made an avoidable error.

Surveillance Footage Draws Attention

The FBI recently shared images and video recovered from a Nest security camera outside Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson residence. The footage shows a masked individual wearing light-colored clothing approaching the home at night.

According to former FBI agent Mark Harrigan, the way the person appears to be carrying a firearm stood out.

He told media outlets that the positioning looked “non-conventional,” noting that individuals attempting to avoid attention would typically keep a weapon concealed rather than visible.

Harrigan suggested this could indicate the person may not have extensive experience handling or carrying a firearm.

Possible Attempt to Hide Camera

Another detail noted by investigators is the suspect’s apparent interaction with vegetation near the camera. The individual appears to reach toward nearby plants, possibly attempting to block the camera’s view.

Harrigan said a more experienced offender might have arrived prepared with tools to disable or obscure the camera more effectively.

Private investigator Andy Kay shared a similar view, describing the behavior as inconsistent with a highly planned operation. Both experts emphasized these observations are opinions, not confirmed facts.

Footage Recovery Required Extra Steps

Authorities explained that retrieving the video took time because the home’s physical camera had been removed and cloud storage was not active. According to officials, the footage was reconstructed from residual backend data.

Former prosecutor John W. Day noted that the recovery process highlights the technical capabilities investigators can use in modern cases.

Ongoing Investigation

The FBI continues to offer a $50,000 reward for information related to Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts.

Savannah Guthrie, Nancy’s daughter and co-host of the Today show, has shared the images publicly and asked for help identifying the person in the footage. She has expressed hope that her mother is still alive and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel recently said investigators are examining multiple persons of interest but stressed that no suspect has been officially identified.

One man who was stopped and questioned by deputies was later released without charges. Authorities have not publicly named any suspect.

Focus on Verified Information

Law enforcement continues to caution the public against speculation. Investigators say verified tips from the community remain one of the most valuable tools in missing-person cases.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the FBI tip line or local authorities.
