It’s widely known that Donald Trump often chooses to display photos and memorabilia that reflect key moments from his career and public life.

Recently, one particular framed photo in the White House drew attention online, and critics quickly shared strong reactions to the president’s choice.

The White House has long featured portraits and photographs tied to U.S. history, including images of past presidents and major national events.

Each administration typically adds its own touches, displaying images that reflect diplomatic meetings, personal milestones, and symbolic moments.

It has now been reported that President Donald Trump placed a framed photo of himself with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the corridor linking the West Wing to the executive residence. The photo was taken last August at a summit in Anchorage, where major world leaders met amid significant media coverage.

White House press corps members have said the Trump-Putin photo is displayed above another framed image of Trump with one of his grandchildren, a placement detail that has fueled discussion online.

PBS News correspondent Elizabeth Landers previously reported the display in January, sharing a photo of the framed images on social media.

Mixed reactions
Reactions have been divided.

Kirill Dmitriev, described as a senior Russian negotiator who has met with Trump adviser Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff, praised the display, saying the image “speaks for itself.”

Critics, however, have expressed concern about the symbolism.

“Having an image of Putin hanging in the @WhiteHouse is disturbing,” wrote one user on X.

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., also criticized the optics on social media, arguing the display “sends the wrong message” and could be viewed as giving undue prominence to a foreign leader during a sensitive geopolitical moment.

“Putting Putin above the American people and his own family,” the Virginia senator Mark Warner, said on social media. “Almost a little too on the nose.”

In Europe, Estonian lawmaker Marko Mihkelson warned that publicly highlighting a friendly moment with Putin could complicate diplomatic efforts related to Ukraine, where the war continues.

“If it is true that the US president considers it appropriate to hang on the White House wall a photo of [Putin], then a just and sustainable peace will have to wait. Unfortunately,” Mihkelson wrote, criticizing the choice.

When asked by The Guardian why this specific photo was chosen, a White House spokesperson said, “The Alaska Summit was a historic moment that helped bring Ukraine and Russia, whose war the administration blames on Joe Biden’s leadership, closer to a deal.”

They added, “This is one of many accomplishments that President Trump chooses to feature at the White House, where photographs are rotated frequently to highlight Presidential travel.”

A historic summit
The Alaska meeting was described as the first in-person encounter between the U.S. and Russian presidents since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine several years ago.

The summit attracted global attention, with cameras capturing multiple handshakes and extended conversations.

Putin was greeted with a formal ceremony, and in one widely discussed moment, he rode in the U.S. presidential limousine — “The Beast” — with Trump rather than using a separate vehicle. Video footage showed the two seated together in the back. Russian officials later described the meeting as an important diplomatic moment, and reports have suggested the Kremlin may reference the summit in future educational materials.

The relationship between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin has long been politically sensitive. Trump has spoken positively about Putin in the past, calling him a “strong leader” and praising his political skills, though there is no public evidence they are close personally beyond official interactions such as summits and phone calls.

Trump’s comments about Putin have frequently drawn criticism in the U.S., particularly amid tensions involving Ukraine, allegations of election interference, and cybersecurity concerns.

The photo’s placement comes alongside other reported changes inside the White House, including a recent renovation of the Palm Room.

While presidents often display images tied to major diplomatic events, this specific photo has received unusually intense public attention.
