Homemade Meatloaf Recipe: A Classic Family Dinner

Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

For the Topping

  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard, optional

Instructions

1. Prepare the Meatloaf Mixture

In a large mixing bowl, add the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, milk, ketchup, soy sauce, salt, and black pepper.

Mix everything together until the ingredients are well combined. Try not to overmix, so the meatloaf stays tender after baking.

2. Shape the Meatloaf

Lightly grease a baking dish or loaf pan. Shape the meat mixture into a loaf and place it into the prepared dish.

You can use a loaf pan for a more compact shape, or form it by hand in a baking dish for a rustic homemade look.

3. Add the Topping

In a small bowl, stir together the ketchup, brown sugar, and mustard, if using.

Spread the sauce evenly over the top of the meatloaf. This gives it a sweet, tangy glaze as it bakes.

4. Bake Until Cooked Through

Bake the meatloaf at 180°C / 350°F for 45 to 55 minutes, or until it is fully cooked in the center.

Once baked, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. This helps the juices settle and makes the meatloaf easier to cut.
