Robert Carradine, the actor known for roles in Revenge of the Nerds and Lizzie McGuire, has passed away at the age of 71.
In a statement shared with Deadline, his family said Carradine had lived with bipolar disorder for nearly two decades. They also expressed hope that sharing his story would encourage more open conversations about mental health.
“We hope his journey can shine a light and encourage addressing the stigma that attaches to mental illness,” the Carradine family said.
Carradine came from one of Hollywood’s best-known acting families. He was the son of actor John Carradine and the brother of fellow performers David Carradine and Keith Carradine, as well as Christopher Carradine, who later held an executive role at Walt Disney Imagineering.

While Carradine built a steady career over many years, younger audiences especially remember him as the warm, supportive father to Hilary Duff’s character on the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire. Duff shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram after learning the news.
“This one hurts. It’s really hard to face this reality about an old friend. There was so much warmth in the McGuire family and I always felt so cared for by my on-screen parents,” Duff wrote. “I’ll be forever grateful for that. I’m deeply sad to learn Bobby was struggling. My heart goes out to him, his family, and everyone who loved him.”
Carradine’s career extended well beyond Disney. He became a cult favorite as Lewis in the Revenge of the Nerds franchise and also appeared in the acclaimed drama Coming Home.
His Hollywood journey began in 1972, when he made his film debut alongside John Wayne in The Cowboys—the start of a career that left a lasting impression on generations of film and TV viewers.
