To me, my grandma was everything. She was my support, my best friend, and my rock. Her passing created a gap that nothing could fill. Looking at her coffin, with her hair styled just how she liked it, she looked peaceful; however, the heartbreak I felt was so immense that I couldn’t believe I would ever get over the pain of not seeing her again.
All of her neighbors and friends came to the funeral home to say their final goodbyes to a woman who touched many lives and made a difference in so many hearts.
As I stood there with tears streaming down my face, I spotted my mom in the corner of the room. She was on her phone acting like she was about to say goodbye to someone she didn’t know at all. Even though I knew she and Grandma never really got along, it shocked me how indifferent she seemed about her own mother’s death.
At one point when it got crowded and while talking to Mrs. Anderson—who reminded me how much Grandma loved me—I saw Mom putting something into Grandma’s coffin. Since I had no idea what wishes Grandma had left behind, I couldn’t guess what Mom slipped inside.
I became really curious so after everyone left, I took the box wrapped in a blue handkerchief from under Grandma’s lifeless body.
“I’m sorry, Grandma,” I whispered as I touched her cold hand one last time.
Later that evening, as I stared at the package on my table “What are you hiding from me Mom?” As slowly untied the frayed thread around it Inside were letters written by my grandmother for my mom!
In those letters grandma mentioned that she knew what mom did—she knew about stealing money for gambling! In the last letter though grandma said everything would go to me: The house all of her things & even money saved up over years!
This truth hit hard; It froze me! Suddenly all those fancy Christmas gifts & requests for “emergencies” using MY credit card made sense now—they were sinister!
The next morning,I called mom asking if we could meet at our local coffee shop.
When she saw me,she smiled but when sitting down tried reaching out for my hand but i refused.I placed those letters on table saying if you try going after what grandma left for ME then truth will come out!
She opened her mouth trying to speak but i stood up leaving without another word. Some secrets just can’t stay hidden forever!
