The Tiger Girls dance squad from Louisiana State University captured the internet’s attention with their championship-winning act of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” at the “Super Bowl of Dance.”
The LSU Dance Team has made history again, winning their fourth title at the Universal Dance Association Hip Hop Competition with another amazing performance at the “Super Bowl of Dance.”
At the 2024 event in Orlando, Florida, the Tiger Girls presented a stunning tribute to Michael Jackson, mixing classic moves with new and modern takes on the late star’s famous choreography.
Wearing white satin outfits, shiny ties, Nike shoes and traditional fedoras, they looked like they had just walked out of a Michael Jackson music video. Their fashionable clothing matched perfectly with their tribute to the King of Pop as they performed flawlessly to “Smooth Criminal.”
This hit song was released in 1988 as part of Jackson’s “Bad” album. It is well-known not only for its catchy rhythm but also for its physically tough dance moves shown in the video.
In an interview with Southern Living, head coach Kandace Hale mentioned that she didn’t think twice when choreographers Carsen Lowe and Sammy McFadden suggested using a Jackson song: “It’s a classic,” she said while adding that “the team is obsessed with Michael Jackson.”

The LSU dancers are known for their perfect timing and unmatched style; they filled every moment with exciting energy. The highlight came when all members formed a sharp diagonal line executing Jackson’s signature hip thrusts together.
In an Instagram post showcasing their championship performance, both choreographers stated: “Facing this challenge to honor an icon like Michael and bring his spirit into today is definitely one of our hardest tasks.”
They continued saying: “But thanks to this team—choreographers, consultants and coaches—we have no choice but to strive for excellence.”
Fans claimed that the team “nailed it” showing “unmatched precision” that was simply unbelievable.
“I can’t stop watching this routine. I am totally addicted,” wrote one user in comments on Instagram.
Another added: “Whoever created this routine deserves a Grammy,” while someone else said: “I got chills watching this. Absolutely incredible!”
Praising her team after winning Hale stated: “Our theme this year was being ‘undeniably us.’ In today’s world everyone seems to want to be someone else. We aimed to do what we do best.”
