Having frequent phlegm in your throat can be uncomfortable and annoying. Many people believe it’s always due to a cold, but the reality is that there are several reasons why the body produces excess mucus.
If you constantly have to clear your throat, pay attention to these possible causes.
Why does the body produce phlegm?
Mucus is a natural substance that the body produces to:
- Protect the airways
- To trap dust, bacteria, and viruses
- Keep mucous membranes moist
The problem arises when its production increases.
Most common causes of persistent phlegm
1. Allergies
Dust, pollen, mites, or pet hair can cause excessive mucus production.
Associated symptoms:
- Sneezing
- Nasal itching
- Teary eyes
2. Gastric reflux
Stomach acid can rise to the throat and irritate it, causing a constant feeling of phlegm, even without a cough.
Other signs:
- Burning sensation in the chest
- Bitter taste in the mouth
- Frequent throat clearing
3. Sinusitis
When the sinuses become inflamed, mucus can drain down into the throat (postnasal drip).
It can be accompanied by:
- Congestion
- Facial pain
- Headache
4. Changes in climate or dry air
Cold or very dry air can irritate the airways and stimulate more mucus production.
