Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson has passed away at the age of 84, his family confirmed. As tributes arrive from across the country, former President Donald Trump shared a message reflecting on his past relationship with the longtime activist.
Jackson, a Baptist minister, civil rights advocate, and two-time presidential candidate, died peacefully on Tuesday surrounded by family, according to a statement released by his loved ones. No immediate cause of death was announced.
“Our father was a servant leader — not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world,” the Jackson family said. “His belief in justice, equality, and compassion touched millions. We ask that his legacy be honored by continuing the work he believed in.”
Jackson had faced significant health challenges in recent years. He lived for more than a decade with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a neurological condition that affects movement and swallowing. He had also publicly disclosed a Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2017 after receiving treatment in Chicago.
A Lifetime of Advocacy
Born in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1941, Jackson became a prominent figure during the civil rights movement. He worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and spent decades advocating for social and economic equality. He later ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988, campaigns that expanded political engagement among diverse communities.

Trump’s Message
On Truth Social, Donald Trump offered condolences and spoke about his past interactions with Jackson. He described Jackson as a dynamic personality who cared deeply about people and said he had known him for many years.
Trump also referenced instances where they worked on shared priorities, including support for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and criminal justice reform efforts. He extended sympathies to Jackson’s family and acknowledged his influence on American public life.
