Sir Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour has come to an end, leaving many of his fans feeling a mix of emotions. The legendary singer performed his final show on June 8th, 2023, at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. This event marked the end of his touring career, as announced on his website. Initially, the tour was set to conclude in 2021, but it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the end of his touring days, Sir Elton John hinted that he might still be involved in the music scene in some way. Over his incredible 50-year career, he has gifted the world with timeless music and unforgettable performances. According to his website, more than 6 million people attended his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.
The decision to retire from touring was driven by Sir Elton’s desire to spend more time with his family. He wants to be there for his husband, David Furnish, and their two sons, Elijah and Zachary. “We had children and had changed our lives and in 2015, we sat down with their school schedule and we said I’m going to miss too much of this,” Sir Elton shared with interviewer Anderson Cooper.
The final tour date was an emotional and special occasion. It celebrated one of the most successful music careers ever. In an Instagram post on Monday, Sir Elton reflected on the journey, saying, “When we set off on my final tour in 2018, I couldn’t have foreseen in my wildest dreams the twists and turns and the highs and lows this tour – and the whole world – would have experienced in the next 5 years”
He continued, expressing gratitude to his fans: “And every step of the way, my fans have been there. You have stuck with me, you have supported me, you have been patient and you have kept turning out for every single last show. Saturday night was magical. I’m trying to process it and I don’t think it will sink in for a while yet that I’m finally finished touring. I can’t tell you how much I’m going to miss you all and how much your support has humbled me – it will stay with me forever.”
During his last show, the 77-year-old singer wore four dazzling costumes and reminisced about his first performance in Sweden in 1971. “I’ve had the most incredible career, beyond words. How fortunate am I to be able to play music for 52 years?” John told the audience as he finished his concert with “Your Song” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” He thanked his fans, saying, “You bought the singles, albums, CDs, and cassettes, but more importantly, you bought the concert tickets, and you know how much I enjoy performing live.”
As the show ended, Sir Elton assured his fans that they will always be in his “head, heart, and soul,” and reiterated that he will “never be touring again.”
The world will undoubtedly miss Sir Elton John’s tours. His music and performances have left a lasting legacy that will be cherished for years to come.
