George Clooney made brutal remark about former friend Trump days before feud over his new citizenship

George Clooney delivered a sharp jab at Donald Trump just days before their long-simmering rivalry flared up again publicly.

The 64-year-old Oscar winner became the target of a lengthy New Year’s Eve post by the 79-year-old U.S. president after Clooney, his wife Amal, and their eight-year-old twins officially obtained French citizenship.

The Clooneys purchased a farm in France in 2021 and have said they now consider it their primary home, believing it offers a healthier environment to raise their children away from Hollywood scrutiny. In an October interview with Esquire, Clooney explained that he didn’t want his kids growing up under constant paparazzi pressure or being compared to other celebrities’ children.

France’s interior ministry confirmed the family completed a strict naturalization process involving interviews and security checks, though it did not disclose specific details.

Trump reacted angrily on Truth Social, criticizing the Clooneys’ move, mocking Clooney’s political views and film career, and atta:cking France’s handling of immigration.

He also revisited Clooney’s past political fundraising and endorsements, framing them as misguided and self-serving.

Clooney responded dryly, telling Deadline that he agreed with the president’s slogan and added that efforts to “make America great again” would begin in November, a clear reference to the midterm elections.

The exchange followed a Variety interview published on December 30, in which Clooney said he and Trump were once on friendly terms. He recalled socializing with Trump years ago and described him as a “goofball,” before noting that their relationship—and Trump himself—had changed.

Clooney also criticized ABC and CBS for settling defamation lawsuits brought by Trump, arguing that challenging those cases would have helped prevent broader damage to American media and politics.

Representatives for Clooney and the networks were contacted for comment.
