Jerry​ and Marcia Savage: A Love Story Cut Short by Tragedy

Their enduring love⁣ was tragically interrupted by Hurricane Helene, which devastated the ‌Southeastern United States.

In the aftermath of⁤ Hurricane Helene, recognized as⁣ the deadliest storm to strike the continental U.S. since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, heart-wrenching accounts of loss are surfacing from affected⁣ areas.

Among those who lost‌ their lives are Jerry⁤ Savage, 78, and his‍ wife Marcia Savage, 74,⁤ a cherished couple from Beech Island, South Carolina.

The‍ catastrophic storm has resulted in at least 231 fatalities across six states. The heartbreaking‌ demise of Jerry and Marcia highlights the ⁤severe consequences of this disaster. A⁤ tree fell onto their home during the storm, crushing the ⁣bedroom where they had ​created countless memories together.

Coroner ​Had to Separate Them

Emergency responders confirmed their deaths upon reaching the tragic scene.

“My father was on‍ top of my mother holding her close as if trying to shield her,” shared⁤ their daughter Tammy Estep, 54. She added poignantly: “The coroner had to separate them.”

Jerry and Marcia first met as teenagers and quickly ​fell in⁤ love. They celebrated⁣ over five ⁤decades of marriage while being actively involved in ⁤their local Baptist church. Their bond was⁢ unique—they were both born on January 22nd but just a few years apart.

Since 1975, they had made their home in a cozy one-story house filled with memories.

Tammy reflected on‍ her ‌parents’ relationship​ as an inspiring example: “Their connection was immediate and everlasting.”

“The Night That⁢ Changed Everything”

Their grandson John Savage was present that fateful night and recounted some devastating details about⁣ what transpired.

At around 4 a.m., John entered his grandparents’ room to check on them; ​he found them shaken but unharmed along with their small dog named Angel.

However, within an hour chaos‌ ensued when they heard “the loudest crash imaginable” as ⁣a tree collapsed onto their home.‌ John⁢ attempted to reach his⁢ grandparents but found himself blocked by debris. It would take time before he learned about the tragic outcome.

“When they removed them from there,” John told ABC4News tearfully, “my grandpa‍ must have ⁣heard that tree⁣ snap beforehand because he rolled over‌ trying​ to protect my ⁣grandma.” He added: “They loved each other⁣ until their last moments.”

Sadly enough, even ⁤Angel—the family’s two-year-old Chow Chow mix—was also discovered ⁤lifeless beside them in bed.

Devoted Family Members

In light of this ⁣tragedy, a fundraising‍ initiative has been launched to assist with funeral expenses managed by relatives who described Jerry and Marcia as “two incredibly kind-hearted ⁤individuals.” According to⁣ information shared on‍ GoFundMe page dedicated ‌for ⁢this purpose ​,they ⁤leave behind two children ​,four grandchildren ,and seven great-grandchildren .

Jerry dedicated his life working as both builder & electrician .He enjoyed⁤ oil painting & had passion for classic motorcycles especially Harley Davidsons according Tammy⁢ .Marcia enjoyed fulfilling career banking before retirement‌ .

“My mom devoted herself entirely towards ‌our family,” Estep recalled fondly⁤ .“Her grandchildren meant everything ⁢; she took pride being homemaker which brought her immense joy & fulfillment.”
