A Shocking Find
When I got back home early from my trip, I found a big hole in my backyard. I was about to call the police when I saw a shovel at the bottom, which made me think twice. “What is this?” I whispered as I walked closer. That night, I set up a lookout and saw someone leap over the fence and into the hole.
Surprising Meeting
I sneaked outside and faced the digger while shining my phone’s light down. To my amazement, it was George, the guy who sold us our house. “Frank?” he said, equally surprised. “What are you doing here?” He explained that his grandpa had hidden something valuable there and he thought he could find it while we were gone. George proposed that if I helped him dig, we would share whatever we found 50/50.
Searching for Treasure
We spent hours digging and sharing stories. George had lost his job and his wife was sick with cancer. “This treasure,” he mentioned, “could change everything for us.” As we dug deeper, George shared tales about his grandpa who didn’t trust banks and buried treasures instead of keeping them in one place. Even though we were just breaking rocks apart, our bond grew stronger.
A New Friendship
In the morning, after finding nothing at all, George looked really downcast. “I really thought… ”I was so sure…” He apologized as we filled in the hole again. When we reached George’s house, his wife Margaret seemed worried: “George! You didn’t.” We reassured her that everything was fine; she even offered to pay for fixing up the yard but I turned it down jokingly about building a pool instead! On my drive home, I felt a sense of connection with him; George’s hopefulness had rubbed off on me! When telling my wife Karen all about it later on she smiled: “Only you Frank would spend an entire night digging for treasure with someone you barely know.” We decided to invite both George & Margaret over for dinner knowing that what mattered most was this new friendship we’d created together!
