Postpartum blues are more common than many of us think. Research shows that about 80% of new parents go through it. A new mother named Gretchen is having a tough time adjusting to her new life, which leads her to ask for some alone time from her family. But things got worse when her in-laws arrived unexpectedly to see the baby. She reached out for advice.
I had my first child two weeks ago and I’m feeling really overwhelmed and not wanting to do much, so my mom came over to help me out. I told my mother-in-law, “Please give us some space now. You can meet the baby later.” She kept calling every single day, so I finally said, “I don’t care if it takes forever! I’m just not ready yet.” She went quiet.
Yesterday while I was sleeping, my mom rushed in looking worried. I woke up hearing my baby cry and saw that my husband looked shocked when he found me in the living room. To my horror, there were nine people from his family at our house without any warning! It turned out that he invited his mom, dad, siblings and even their kids without telling me anything.
I confronted him about it because he shouldn’t have invited them over without asking me first! He replied with “You’re overreacting; it’s not like you had to cook or host them for days.”
I felt totally stressed out seeing my mother-in-law smiling like she won something as if she was pleased with herself for teaching me a lesson. Without saying anything else, I grabbed my purse and left the house still wearing pajamas! Do you think maybe I overreacted?
