Among those lost was 12-year-old Kylie Smith, a student at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Her parents are now speaking publicly, asking that attention remain on the victims and the lives they lived.
A Family’s Loss
Kylie’s father, Lance Young, told CTV News that he had dropped his daughter off at school that morning like any other day, not knowing it would be their final goodbye.
He described Kylie as a kind and creative child who loved anime and art and had hopes of studying in Toronto in the future. She was just months away from her 13th birthday.
In his message to the public, Lance encouraged parents to cherish time with their children and express love often, noting how quickly life can change.
What Authorities Have Confirmed
Police reported receiving calls about an active shooter at the school around early afternoon. Officers arrived quickly and began securing the area and assisting victims.
Investigators also confirmed a related incident at a nearby residence. Several people were killed across the two locations. The suspect was among the deceased. Officials have not publicly shared a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
