Passenger Says Pre-Ordered Vegan Meal Was Missed on Long-Haul Flight, Receives Snacks Instead

A long flight can be tiring, and for many travelers, in-flight meals are an important part of staying comfortable during the journey. That’s especially true for passengers with specific dietary needs who plan ahead to ensure suitable food is available. One traveler recently shared her experience after a pre-ordered vegan meal was not available on her international flight, sparking conversation online about airline meal planning and communication.

Miriam Porter was traveling on a roughly 10-hour route from Frankfurt, Germany, to Toronto, Canada, and had arranged vegan meals in advance. According to her account, she selected her dietary preference about a month before departure and received multiple confirmations ahead of the trip. However, when meal service began, her requested option was not provided.

Instead of the expected vegan entrée, Porter said she was initially offered only bottled water. Later, when other passengers received a second hot meal, she again did not receive a full meal. She later explained that a flight attendant kindly brought her fruit and a granola bar after noticing the issue, which helped somewhat during the remainder of the flight.

Porter shared her experience on TikTok, where her video drew attention from other travelers who said they had experienced similar mix-ups with special meal requests. In comments and follow-up remarks, Porter noted that she often brings her own food when traveling, but this time a delay and schedule disruption made it difficult to prepare or purchase suitable meals before boarding.

Speaking to Business Insider, Porter said she appreciated the effort of the cabin crew who tried to assist once the problem became clear. She also emphasized that travel can be unpredictable and that many passengers have faced challenges with meal availability, especially on long or delayed trips.

Airline special-meal requests—such as vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, or allergy-friendly options—are common across major carriers, including Air Canada. While these requests are typically accommodated, availability can depend on catering logistics, flight changes, and inventory loaded onto the aircraft.

For travelers with strict dietary needs, frequent flyers often recommend a few precautions:

• Reconfirm special meals 24–48 hours before departure
• Carry portable snacks when possible
• Allow extra time during connections to buy suitable food
• Inform cabin crew early if a requested meal is missing

Situations like Porter’s highlight how important clear communication and backup planning can be during air travel. While most flights go smoothly, unexpected hiccups can happen, and small preparations can make a big difference in comfort along the way.
