Rick Moranis left Hollywood to be a single dad

There are millions of people around the world who dream of making it big in Hollywood. Chances are if you asked most people, they would agree that they would consider themselves lucky to get a shot at a movie.

However, there are some rare people who make it to Hollywood and then willingly leave it all behind. Rick Moranis is one of them.

More than 20 years ago, Rick Moranis decided to leave the glamor of Hollywood behind. The ‘Honey, I Shrunk the Kids‘ actor decided he needed to focus on other things that were more important to him at the time.

Moranis stepped away from the limelight in the late 1990s so he could raise his kids after his wife passed away. His wife, Ann Belsky, was a makeup artist who died of breast cancer in 1991 at the age of 35.

After he lost his partner, he made the tough decision to stay home for his children, his son Mitchell and daughter Rachel. He would still get offers from friends in the industry about exciting new projects but would staunchly say no each time.

“I pulled out of making movies in about ’96 or ’97,” he said in a 2005 interview with USA Today. “I’m a single parent, and I just found that it was too difficult to manage raising my kids and doing the traveling involved in making movies. So I took a little bit of a break. And the little bit of a break turned into a longer break, and then I found that I really didn’t miss it.”

However, his fans still missed him on screen and hoped he would make a return. So when actor Ryan Reynolds shared a clip of his commercial on Twitter a few years ago, a lot of people were thrilled to see Moranis on screen again.

“I grew up watching Rick Moranis on SCTV. The man is a *bleeping* legend and I will fight anyone who disagrees. And for bringing him in on this, you’re pretty okay too,” one posted.

Another fan was awe-struck at seeing the ‘Ghostbusters‘ star again, to which Reynolds responded saying, that he “wept” when Moranis agreed to the project.

One of Moranis’ last movie roles before he left acting was 1997’s ‘Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves,’ where he reprised the role of unlucky inventor character named Wayne Szalinski. The actor was supposed to reprise the role once again in ‘Shrunk‘ but there have not been any updates about the movie since 2023 since Josh Gad, who as also set to star in the project, posted on X that he did not know much about the project’s status since COVID hit and encouraged fans to ask Disney for it.
