The late Newman, who passed away on May 11, “was a rock for so many people,” said his wife Angela.
According to several reports, Barry Newman, famous for his part in the classic action movie The Vanishing Point, passed away on May 11 in a hospital located in New York City.
The Emmy-nominated actor was 92 years old. There is no more information about his death.
Angela, Newman’s wife who is still living, confirmed that her husband had died. Friends also shared the news on social media according to Deadline.
Angela remembered Newman as “a rock for so many people whose spirits he lifted and allowed to be free” in a tribute to THR. “He had an amazing and funny sense of humor that brightened everything and everyone. He was truly a light for so many.”
The theater, film and television actor grew up in Boston and is best known for his leading role in the 1974 legal drama Petrocelli. He chose acting after meeting Lee Strasberg while studying at Brandeis University in Waltham Massachusetts. After graduating he took acting classes in New York City.
Newman went on to star in movies like Daylight with Sylvester Stallone released in 1996; Bowfinger with Steve Martin from 1999; and The Limey with the late Peter Fonda also from that year.
As per various websites, Newman was diagnosed with vocal cord can:cer back in 2009 which limited his acting chances.
Finding Hannah was his latest project made back in 2019 but released only recently.
In the same year he mentioned how one of Steven Spielberg’s favorite films from 1971 called Vanishing Point helped him get early fame. The cult classic didn’t become popular right away here but when it came out over there “people lined up around the block to see it,” as reported by THR according to Newman.
“In America I was just some guy picking up bags at the airport while over there I was a hero.”
