US taxpayers set to receive ‘largest tax refund’ in history

Tax refunds are set to surge for the 2026 filing season, with the average American expected to pocket $1,000 or more extra compared to previous years, according to multiple financial analyses.

“As tax season kicks off, millions of Americans are poised to receive significantly larger tax refunds thanks to President Donald J. Trump’s landmark Working Families Tax Cuts Act,” White House officials says.

The “Working Families Tax Cuts Act” is poised to deliver what the Trump administration calls “the biggest tax refund season ever,” benefiting “honest, hard-working Americans.”

This week, the White House website highlighted that “every Democrat in Congress opposed” the legislation, noting that “millions of Americans are poised to receive significantly larger tax refunds.” The act, also dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” is expected to usher in record-breaking refunds this season.

Signed into law on July 4, 2025, the act “provides broad-based tax relief for hardworking Americans.”

According to the administration, it will “deliver on the president’s promise to put America first,” offering “permanent tax cuts for workers and families” and “promoting economic security through new savings vehicles for American families.”

Beyond individual relief, the legislation aims to boost small businesses, support American agriculture, revive domestic manufacturing, fund educational initiatives, and “protect American’s borders and national sovereignty.”

It also pledges “unwavering support for American families and the sanctity of life,” “ensuring American energy independence and global leadership,” and “eliminating fraud and abuse to ensure responsible use of public funds.”

“Ensuring honest, hard-working Americans keep more of what they earn,” adds the US Department of the Treasury’s website.

Tax refunds for 2026

Experts are predicting a significant boost in tax refunds for 2026. Business Insider reported that “The Tax Foundation estimates that the average tax refund will grow from $3,052 in 2024 to $3,800 for tax year 2025. Depending on your income and circumstances, you might get even more back.”

According to CBS News, “Many Americans could see heftier tax refunds next year when they file their 2025 tax returns, largely due to new provisions enacted through the Republicans’ ‘one big, beautiful bill’ act that are retroactive to the start of the current year, according to an analysis from Oxford Economics. Total taxpayer savings could amount to an additional $50 billion through bigger tax refunds or a cut in their 2026 taxes…A $50 billion boost in tax refunds would represent an 18% increase from the $275 billion in refunds the IRS sent this year to nearly 94 million taxpayers who overpaid on their 2024 federal tax returns.”

CNBC added that “Tax experts and analysts have agreed that many filers will see bigger refunds… ‘Overall, we’re expecting these changes to increase refunds by 15% to 20% on average,’ Heather Berger, a U.S. economist with Morgan Stanley said…”

And The Wall Street Journal reported that “Refunds on average are expected to come in $1,000 higher than usual this year, according to a study by investment firm Piper Sandler.”

How much could taxpayers save?

The White House claims “the average taxpayer” can “expect to see nearly $4,000 in total tax savings in 2026” — specifically, $3,750 per filer.

The administration projects $100 billion in total tax refunds in 2026 for American families, $7,200 higher wages per American worker, and 7.2 million American jobs protected and created.

“Key provisions of the bill include No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime, No Tax on Social Security, a deduction for auto loan interest on Made-in-America vehicles, and much more — putting more money back in the pockets of families, workers, and seniors,” the White House notes.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said of the legislation:

”The Working Families Tax Cuts are about opening the books for the American people. We want Americans to see exactly how President Trump’s policies will strengthen small businesses, allow workers to keep more of their hard-earned money and spur economic growth.”
