Why Showering Before Bed Might Be Better for Your Health Than in the Morning

There are two types of people in the world: those who prefer to shower in the morning and those who choose to shower at night.

Personally, I’m an advocate for evening showers. I love climbing into bed feeling fresh and clean, particularly when I’ve just slipped into a pair of freshly laundered pajamas and tucked myself into crisp, recently changed sheets.

It’s a matter of personal preference, of course, but even medical professionals have weighed in on this longstanding debate.

Dr. Aragona Giuseppe, a general practitioner and medical advisor at Prescription Doctor, shared his thoughts on the topic. He suggests that morning showers might be more popular since they “awaken the senses and refresh you for the day ahead.” However, Dr. Giuseppe doesn’t necessarily believe this makes them the superior option.

In fact, he advocates for the benefits of showering at night. According to Dr. Giuseppe, a nighttime shower can help to relax your body before sleep, soothe muscle tension in areas like your shoulders—particularly if you’ve been to the gym or had a stressful day at work—and rinse away the dirt accumulated during the day.

Additional Benefits of Nighttime Showers

One of the key advantages Dr. Giuseppe highlights is the potential for nighttime showers to promote better cleanliness. During the day, our bodies and hair pick up airborne allergens, dirt, and pollutants—especially in the warmer months when pollen, chemicals, and sweat are more prevalent. If you don’t shower before bed, all of these particles transfer to your sheets, potentially leading to dirty bedding and nighttime allergies. This can also cause itchy, irritated skin and facial issues like acne, which are often triggered by the oil and dirt left on your pillowcases and sheets.

To summarize, Dr. Giuseppe believes nighttime showers contribute more to both cleanliness and quality sleep.

Shower Duration Matters

When it comes to the ideal length of time you should spend in the shower, whether in the morning or evening, dermatologist Emma Amoafo-Mensah suggests limiting it to under ten minutes. “Many people are spending too long in the shower, and the optimal time should be under ten minutes,” she shared with The Metro. “Spending longer than this increases the chances of your skin feeling dry and irritated, especially if the water is too hot and you’re prone to dry skin.”

Amoafo-Mensah also advises people to avoid excessively hot water during their showers, as it can strip the skin of its natural oils, further exacerbating dryness and irritation.

In conclusion, while the decision between a morning or evening shower is ultimately up to you, it seems that a nighttime shower might offer more benefits when it comes to both personal hygiene and your skin’s overall health. So, whether you’re winding down for bed or starting your day, the best approach is to keep your shower routine brief and at a comfortable temperature to maintain clean skin and optimal health.
