Grandma’s Clever Pool Cleaning Trick Is Getting Attention for All the Right Reasons

Keeping a swimming pool clean can quickly turn into a time-consuming and expensive chore. Between scrubbing, vacuuming, clearing debris, and balancing the water, regular maintenance often requires both effort and money. For many pool owners, even a small shortcut that saves time can make a big difference.

That is why a simple pool cleaning trick shared by one homeowner has attracted so much interest. Lisa Pack, a 49-year-old from Ohio, was looking for an easier way to deal with her pool, which had started to look greenish and cloudy. Like many people, she was not excited about the thought of spending hours scrubbing and trying different cleaning methods. Over time, pool water can develop a green tint because of algae growth, especially during warmer months when maintenance becomes more difficult and chemical balance can easily shift.

One of the most talked-about tricks she tried involved placing a Magic Eraser inside the skimmer basket. According to her experience, this simple addition appeared to help reduce the cloudy look of the water. While pool skimmers are mainly designed to collect larger debris such as leaves and insects, some homeowners believe small add-ons like this can help trap extra residue and improve clarity.

Another popular tip for pool owners is using pantyhose in the skimmer basket. This method is often recommended as a way to catch finer dirt and debris that might otherwise pass through. When secured properly, the fabric can act as an extra filter and help collect smaller particles before they circulate back into the water.

For pools with sand filters, some people also use diatomaceous earth, often called DE. This fine powder can improve filtration by helping trap very small particles that ordinary sand filters may miss. As a result, the pool water may stay clearer for longer.

A surprisingly simple trick for oily residue is to toss a tennis ball into the pool. The fuzzy surface can help absorb oils left behind by sunscreen and other products, which may also reduce buildup on the water’s surface.

When insects become a problem, some homeowners place dryer sheets in the filter baskets or use citronella candles nearby to help discourage pests from gathering around the pool area.

For stains and buildup, common household ingredients can also be useful. Vinegar is often used for calcium deposits, lime juice may help with certain rust-like marks, and baking soda can be useful for scrubbing dirty tiles.

These easy pool care ideas show that sometimes simple household items can support regular maintenance and make the job a little easier. While they may not replace proper pool care entirely, they can be helpful additions for anyone looking to keep their pool cleaner with less effort.
