In 1972, Don McLean’s “American Pie” topped the charts, Richard Nixon’s administration was embroiled in Watergate, and NASA launched its Space Shuttle program. That same year, Bob Barker began hosting “The Price is Right,” a role that would cement his status as a household name.
Bob Barker, now 99, grew up on a Sioux reservation in South Dakota. He met his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Jo Gideon, at an Ella Fitzgerald event and married her in 1945 while on leave from the U.S. Navy Reserve. Barker earned a degree in economics before starting his career in entertainment.
His big break came when he was selected to host “Truth or Consequences” in 1956. Barker’s charisma led him to host the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants and, eventually, “The Price is Right,” where he became an icon. In 1988, he became the show’s executive producer and won numerous Emmy Awards.
Barker’s wife, Dorothy Jo, passed away from lung cancer in 1981. He never remarried but found companionship with Nancy Burnet. Known for his limited use of medications, Barker maintains good health with just a thyroid prescription, despite past health issues, including a stroke and prostate surgery.
Burnet credits Barker’s longevity to his vegetarian diet and supplements. After retiring, Barker made guest appearances on “The Price is Right,” now hosted by Drew Carey. Barker remains passionate about animal rights, inspired by Dorothy Jo, who was an early advocate. His catchphrase, “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered,” became famous.
Barker’s DJ&T Foundation, named after Dorothy Jo and his mother Tilly, supports animal rights education at law schools. Together with Burnet, Barker continues to promote animal welfare. Bob Barker’s nearly century-long life has been one of entertainment, advocacy, and compassion.
