Doctor Explains Commonly Ignored Signs of Colorectal Cancer After James Van Der Beek Mistook a Symptom for Coffee Effects

A medical expert is raising awareness about colorectal cancer symptoms that are often overlooked or mistaken for less serious issues, following renewed public discussion about the illness after the passing of actor James Van Der Beek.

Van Der Beek, widely known for his roles in Dawson’s Creek, Varsity Blues, and The Rules of Attraction, as well as his appearance on Dancing With the Stars, died at age 48. His family shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, describing him as a devoted husband, father, son, and friend.

The actor had previously spoken openly about his colorectal cancer diagnosis, revealing that he initially misunderstood some of his symptoms. He once shared that he thought changes in his bowel habits were related to drinking too much coffee.

His story has helped bring attention to how easily early warning signs can be misinterpreted.

Why Symptoms Are Often Dismissed

Dr. Donald Grant, a GP and Senior Clinical Advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, explains that colorectal cancer can present symptoms that overlap with many common digestive issues.

Because of this, people may delay seeking medical advice.

“With so many overlapping symptoms, it can be easy to mistake colorectal cancer for a different condition,” Dr. Grant noted. “This can delay diagnosis and treatment.”

Commonly Ignored Signs

Changes in bowel habits
Persistent diarrhea, constipation, or blood in the stool should not be ignored. While these can be linked to diet or stress, ongoing issues warrant medical evaluation.

Abdominal discomfort
Bloating, cramps, or stomach pain may be blamed on indigestion or food sensitivities. However, if these symptoms last for weeks, it’s important to consult a doctor.

Fatigue and weakness
Colorectal cancer can sometimes cause slow internal bleeding, leading to iron-deficiency anemia. This may result in tiredness, dizziness, or shortness of breath. Fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest should be checked by a healthcare professional.

The Importance of Early Attention

Health experts emphasize that noticing persistent changes in the body and discussing them with a GP can make a meaningful difference. Early detection improves treatment outcomes.

James Van Der Beek used his platform to encourage awareness about colorectal cancer, and medical professionals continue to stress the value of recognizing potential warning signs early.
