McDonald’s explains why it has removed ‘80%’ of its vegetarian options following backlash

McDonald’s has revealed why it has removed most of its vegetarian options from the menu.

The fast food giant appears to have no problem selling Big Macs, Chicken McNuggets and their ever famous French fries. When it comes to veggie food, however, Maccies has suggested that some of their dishes aren’t doing so well.

As reported by The Sun, a McDonald’s spokesperson said they are set to axe a number of meat-free options, with the outlet noting the removal ’80 percent’ of its vegetarian meals.

“As a non-meat eater I’m genuinely shocked,” Jennifer Powell, 32, said.

“Quite why a considerate, modern firm based on every high street is now treating vegetarians like an afterthought and a nuisance is a mystery.”

Powell went as far to say that restaurants nowadays view vegetarians ‘as second class citizens’.

It comes after the outlet reported that McDonald’s will be dropping the following dishes:

The Vegetable Deluxe will reportedly not make the cut (McDonald’s)

  • Veggie Dippers
  • Veggie Dipper Happy Meals
  • Spicy Veggie Wraps
  • Vegetable Deluxe sandwiches.

The vegan McPlant burger is set to be the chain’s only plant-based option from next week onwards.

“We’re always listening to our customers to help inform and evolve our menu,” a spokesperson said earlier this week.

They said that after ‘reviewing feedback, alongside the sales data of our Veggie Dippers’, they came to the conclusion that the ‘product does not match the appeal of McPlant for our vegetarian customers’.

No more Veggie Dippers (McDonald’s)

“That’s why we’ve made the decision to remove them from the menu from 3 February, as we focus on developing better vegetarian options that meet our high standards,” they added.

“While McPlant remains a firm fan favourite and will continue to be the go-to choice for our vegetarian and vegan customers, we recognise these changes may be disappointing for some.

“We are actively learning from other markets to understand which vegetarian and vegan options are proving most popular and exploring exciting new offerings that we know customers will love.”

Despite the setback, The Vegan Society has said that they are ‘pleased to see that the popular vegan McPlant burger remains on the menu and that McDonald’s says it will focus on developing better options for people who don’t want to eat meat’.

In other news, Maccies have announced that they are teaming up with Warner Bros. to launch a limited-edition Friends meal, landing nationwide from Tuesday 3 February.

Customers can choose from a Big Mac, 9 Chicken McNuggets, or McPlant®, each served with one of six exclusive Friends collectibles.

They’re also releasing Monica’s Signature Marinara Sauce ‘inspired by everyone’s favourite chef’.

LADbible Group has contacted McDonald’s for comment.
