A woman turned to Reddit’s ‘Am I The A*****e‘ thread for help after a heated argument with her fiancé over finances left her questioning their relationship.
The 32-year-old woman, known as Original Poster (OP), shared that she got engaged to her 35-year-old partner after five years together, with a wedding date set for May 2025. Shortly after the engagement, OP’s grandmother passed away, leaving her a substantial sum of money.
Trouble began when OP overheard her fiancé telling his friends he would use her inheritance to pay off his credit card debt and fund a boys’ holiday. Confronting him, she declared the money was hers alone, sparking a furious argument. Her fiancé accused her of being selfish, stating, “We are getting married, you will become my financial BURDEN. Any money you take in is mine also.”
Upset, OP left to stay with a friend and asked the Reddit community if she was in the wrong. She received overwhelming support and empathy. One user commented, “He thinks of you as a burden and plans to spend money that isn’t his on his ‘boys.’ You’re nuts if you marry him.” Another added, “He assumed he’s entitled to the money and plans to spend it without including you. That’s a huge problem.”
A third user advised, “Stop the wedding. Do not marry this guy. He’s living beyond his means and exhibiting classic narcissistic behavior. Your grandparents’ last gift wasn’t just money, but the wisdom to see his true nature.”
